The dictionary defines genealogy as the study or investigation of ancestry and family history. Most people who choose to trace their genealogy first start out by doing it as a hobby. They efforts do not start out as an investigation.
Genealogy the Urge To Research
Sometimes an interest in family history develops when a teacher creates a school project for their class for the students to trace their roots. It could start in grade school when a student is asked to determine when their grandparents were born or married. This small piece of data may start a child on a curious exploration of more family facts.
Later in grade school students may be asked to determine when their family immigrated to the United States. This may include learning the birth dates of great grandparents, job history or other pertinent family information. During this period of educational development students are often quite interested in their genealogy. They find that their parents and grandparents are great reference sources and they are often anxious to do even more research to add information to the family history tree.
However this topic seems to fade for youngsters and often does not arise again until shortly before or after marriage. Young adults are intrigued about mixing family history. It can play an important role for couples who are planning or picking baby names. Newlyweds often take a keen interest in learning each others family history and record as much family information as they can.
In order to learn as much as possible it is important for a person to approach the oldest member of their family. This person may hold a wealth of family history information. A person should be ready to record this information for their genealogy records. Even if this senior family member does not have all the details they may provide clues or other references to contact to gather more facts. However, remember that information that may be considered factual should be verified when possible.
Just like the younger child in the movie remembered someone named Rainman he later learns that the real name of the person was Raymond. A person may think that they need to locate their family history in Russia. However an older relative may provide key information by clarifying that their family actually came from Prussia. You can see that attention to detail is very important when gathering family history information.
Researching genealogy can be fun. It provides an opportunity to get to know your older relatives and bond with them. One can gain a greater appreciation of the struggles they endured for their family. A person really learns to appreciate their family and their family history by doing a little genealogy research.
